DOLE RECALLS SALAD MIX IN CANADA AND U.S.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — A division of Dole Food Co. last week issued a voluntary international recall of the company's Dole's Hearts Delight salad mix after a sample taken from a store in Canada tested positive for E. coli. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned consumers not to eat the product. Bags of potentially affected product were sold in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces in Canada; and in Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and some neighboring states in the U.S. Combined with Metz Fresh's recall of 8,000 cases of spinach in late August, the recall marked the second time in less than a month that a major supplier was forced to recall a fresh leafy green product due to possible bacterial contamination, leading the media, as well as many consumer groups, to draw comparisons to the E. coli outbreak in September 2006.
