Group Launched for Packaging Safety

The Global Food Safety Initiative, which is coordinated by the Consumer Goods Forum, has launched a new technical working group on packaging in an effort to address food safety concerns.

PARIS — The Global Food Safety Initiative, which is coordinated by the Consumer Goods Forum here, has launched a new technical working group on packaging in an effort to address food safety concerns.

The working group will have a broad mandate to: Review current best practices in relation to the manufacturing of food packaging; define and develop food safety requirements for packaging manufacturing; review and define the competence of auditors of packaging; review and define the duration of packaging audits; and provide technical recommendations and advice to the GFSI board on issues relating to packaging in the food supply chain.

"One of the key pillars of our global food safety strategy is build upon requirements for our supplies to be GFSI-certified, and so it is vitally important that packaging food safety risks are managed and mitigated using the same science-based approach we use for ingredients and manufacturing processes within the supply chain," said Neil Marshall, director, global quality and food safety, Coca-Cola, in a statement.

The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is a collaboration among food safety experts from retailer, manufacturer and food service companies, as well as service providers associated with the food supply chain.
