BOISE, Idaho -- Stores owned by Albertson's here were suspected to have received counterfeit cans of Sebastian Shaper hair spray after the Woodland Hills, Calif.-based salon hair care supplier discovered the problem, according to F-D-C Reports. Albertson's could not be reached for comment.

The cans were reportedly shipped to the U.S. in May and sold to the retailer between June and October. Mark Riedel, vice president, legal affairs, Sebastian International told SN the counterfeit cans were discovered through their agent in Italy. The U.S. customs service and the Department of Justice are investigating the incident, which could reportedly result in a criminal case or possible civil legal action for damages against the supplier. Additionally, the 138-unit Youngstown, Ohio-based drug chain Phar-Mor received some of the cans, according to the report. Riedel declined to name specific retailers thought to be selling the counterfeit product. "If you purchase a Sebastian product in unauthorized locations, you are taking the risk that the product is old, damaged or fake." noted Riedel.
