MESA, Ariz. - Megafoods Stores here said sales for the second quarter ended July 2 rose 95% over the year-age period.
luding earnings, on Aug. 11.
Sales for the 13-week quarter totaled $179.2 million and were accelerated by the addition of 36 stores in Texas. For the half, sales rose 79% to $329.2 million.
Despite the big overall sales jump, same-store sales - which exclude units in Texas and others open less than a full year - were down nearly 4% for the quarter and flat for the first half, the company said.
According to Jack J. Walker, executive vice president and chief financial officer, the drop-off in same-store sales was caused principally by the Easter holiday falling in the first quarter this year, the continuing recession in California and the impact of four new stores in Phoenix.
