MONTVALE, N.J. -- A&P here said sales at its U.S. stores showed a "strong recovery" in the second quarter, but both sales and earnings at its Canadian operations continued to feel the effects of 1993's 14-week strike.
James Wood, chairman and chief executive officer, said the second-quarter sales at the company's U.S. stores showed "a strong recovery with continuing identical-store sales up 2.9% and comparable-store sales, which include replacement stores, up 3.4% over the prior year."
Wood said earnings at A&P's U.S. stores were "moving in the same upward direction." In Canada, however, Wood said sales and earnings are still behind last year's results.
