WASHINGTON — “Behind-the-counter” sales of certain drugs — that is, sold by pharmacists without a prescription — are being considered by the Food and Drug Administration, according to a notice published in the Federal Register yesterday. A public meeting is scheduled for Nov. 14. This type of drug sale has been mentioned by retailers — and some say it is already in place with the emergency contraceptive Plan B and the decongestant pseudoephedrine — but FDA said this week it is seeking public comment on making more medicines available this way. Birth control and cholesterol-lowering drugs have been mentioned.
