Ahold Mulls Sale of ICA Stake

AMSTERDAM — Ahold here said Tuesday it would explore “strategic options” for its 60% stake in Swedish retailer ICA, including a possible initial public offering.

Ahold, which owns the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle banners in the U.S., said it wants to focus its growth strategies on the businesses it controls. Ahold and Hakon Invest AB of Sweden jointly share controlling interest in ICA, which is the leading food retailer in Sweden and also operates Rimi stores in Norway and the Baltics.

In a note issued Tuesday, Morgan Stanley valued Ahold’s stake in ICA at about $1.8 billion.

Ahold said it expected the review to take six months to a year.
