BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The combination of Belle Foods’ bankruptcy and Rouses Supermarkets defection for another wholesaler is leading to layoffs and possible closure for C&S Wholesale Grocers’ warehouse and distribution facility here.
The Keane, N.H.-based distributor filed notice with state labor authorities that its Birmingham Logistics facility could close by Aug. 28. C&S filed the notice on the same day Belle Foods filed for Chapter 11 protection.
Belle since filing for bankruptcy protection said it would close 13 of its 57 stores and seek to sell another 12. Its largest creditor is C&S. Belle Foods was the facility’s largest remaining customer after Rouse Supermarkets switched its primary wholesaler to Associated Wholesale Grocers.
C&S laid off 182 workers at its Birmingham facility July 7 in connection with Rouse’s departure.
