MINNESOTA — Training needs to reflect strategies for individual departments and categories as well as individual retail locations, a speaker at the Food Marketing Institute Human Resources/Training and Development Conference here said yesterday. “We need to develop training programs by market, by department and by category,” said Christine Walsh, director of Supervalu University, a training program for retail customers of Supervalu’s distribution arm. While store employees need to be trained on the overall corporate strategies as well, individual stores have unique pressures that call for customized training, sometimes even down to the product level, she said. She also suggested that retailers should train their vendors about their corporate strategies as well to help them better understand the retailers‚ objectives.
