Safeway Sends Counselors to Shooting Site

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here said Saturday it sent grief counselors to its store in Tucson, Ariz., where U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and others were shot earlier in the day.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here said Saturday it sent grief counselors to its store in Tucson, Ariz., where U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and others were shot earlier in the day.

"We have sent grief counselors to the store to provide emotional support to those affected by this tragedy, and we will continue to look for ways to be of comfort to the many employees, customers and others who are devastated by what has happened," a spokesman for the company told SN.

"We share the grief and shock that everyone in Tucson and the nation are feeling following this tragic act of violence. Like everyone else, we are struggling to understand this tragedy and are giving all assistance we can to the law enforcement agencies that are investigating."

Giffords was reported in critical condition after the shooting, with a gunshot wound to the head. Six people were killed, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl, and 12 were wounded in the shooting, reports said.
