Strack & Van Til to Acquire 7 Stores

HIGHLAND, Ill. — Strack & Van Til here has agreed to acquire seven grocery stores from WiseWay Supermarkets, Merrillville, Ind., the companies said.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in December.

WiseWay operates stores under the WiseWay and PawLow banners in northwest Indiana. The company said it would continue to operate one WiseWay store in Winfield, Ind., as well as its WiseGuys Discount Liquors chain.

Strack & Van Til operates 30 stores in the metro Chicago and northwest Indiana markets. The company said it intends to convert the three PayLow stores to the Ultra Foods banner, and convert the four WiseWay stores to the Strack & Van Til brand.

“I am pleased that Strack & Van Til is acquiring the stores. Strack’s corporate culture parallels the way we do business. They are a local company that has a commitment to the communities we serve in Northwest Indiana,” Don Weiss, president of WiseWay Supermarkets, said in a statement.

Strack & Van Til said the PayLow store in Merrillville would be closed temporarily to allow for remodeling. It said it would also complete a renovation currently underway at a WiseWay in Valparasio, Ind.

Both WiseWay and Strack & Van Til are supplied by Central Grocers, Joliet, Ill.
