Vons Stops Doubling Coupons

EL MONTE, Calif. — The Vons division of Safeway, based in Southern California, will stop doubling the value of manufacturer coupons, effective next Wednesday, the company said this week.

The change will affect stores in the Los Angeles-San Diego markets. Vons already ceased doubling coupons at stores in central California and Las Vegas.

"As of Aug. 1, manufacturers' coupons will be accepted only at their face value in all Vons and Pavilions locations," the company said in a prepared statement. "The change allows us to offer new ways for our customers to save," it added, including Safeway's Just for U digital program, which was introduced in the Vons stores a few weeks ago.

Vons has been doubling coupons for approximately 20 years. Crosstown rival Ralphs, a division of the Kroger Co., stopped doubling coupons in April.
