MINNEAPOLIS — Target confirmed Thursday that a data breach may have affected 40 million customers who made credit card and debit card purchases at the retailer between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.
Target said it was working closely with law enforcement and financial institutions, and has identified and resolved the issue. Published reports Thursday said the breach was made at individual store sites where card readers may have been tampered with.
“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Target, said in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.”
In a message to customers posted on Target’s website, the retailer said it had determined that the information involved in the incident included customer name, credit or debit card number, and the card’s expiration date and CVV (the three-digit security code). It affected U.S. consumers only. Target said customers who shopped at Target between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 should check their accounts for any suspicious or unusual activity.
