Taking a look inside Amazon Go’s first NYC store

Amazon’s 12th Go outlet, the store is located in downtown Manhattan on the second level of the Brookfield Place mall inside the American Express Tower, near One World Trade Center.

Customers enter by scanning a barcode in the Amazon Go app on their phone, which tallies items as they’re taken and charges the customer’s Amazon account after he/she exits.

The store is the first Amazon Go to accept cash. To pay in cash, customers must ask an associate to scan them inside and then, when done shopping, go to a checkout cart to pay and get a receipt.

Emphasizing convenience, Amazon Go offers grab-and-go fare ranging from wraps, salads and soup to sides, baked goods and heat-and-eat dishes.

Shoppers also can buy chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, which contain all the ingredients to make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.

Overhead cameras, sensors and deep learning technology detect items that shoppers take from or return to shelves.

Sandwiches and other consumables are prepared at an off-site Amazon kitchen.

Despite its compact space, the store serves up a sizable food menu, including sushi.

As in other locations, the New York Amazon Go carries a small assortment of groceries.

Some Amazon Go first-timers hesitated a bit through the turnstiles with the Just Walk Out technology.

Local New York favorites sold at the store include Ess-a-Bagel, Terranova Bakery, Magnolia Bakery, Dominique Ansel, Epicured, Bien Cuit and Hale & Hearty.

Amazon Go sits near an entrance at the upscale Brookfield Place mall, which houses a mix of fashionable shops, food vendors and restaurants.
