Unified Grocers Launches Check Conversion at Member Stores

COMMERCE, Calif. — Unified Grocers here has begun implementing electronic check conversion at the checkouts of its independent member retailers, said Mike Brown, general manager, retail technology. Under this process, checks are scanned and returned to shoppers at the checkout, with MICR data from the checks processed through the Automated Clearing House (ACH). Between 20 and 30 stores have started using the technology over the past few months, said Brown. The process, called Electronic Check Acceptance, is provided by First Data’s TeleCheck Services, Greenwood Village, Colo. The cost is 25 cents per check for both electronic check processing and check guarantee services, said Brown. “It’s working well,” he said. “Retailers get their money in two days and it’s guaranteed, too.”
