Wegmans Food Markets ranked No. 12 this year on Fortune Magazine’s annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.
The Rochester, N.Y.-based chain had ranked No. 5 last year.
In naming the company to the list again this year, Fortune cited Wegmans’ flexible scheduling, employee scholarship program, and other initiatives that “help young employees grow within the company.” In addition, 66% of jobs are filled through internal promotions.
Other food retailers on the list include Woodland, Calif.-based Nugget Markets, which came in at No. 36, up from No. 37 a year ago; Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, at No. 44, up from No. 71 last year; and Publix Super Markets, Lakeland, Fla.; at No. 75, up from No. 77 last year.
Convenience-store chains on this year’s list include QuikTrip, Tulsa, Okla., at No. 48, up from No. 66 a year ago; and Sheetz, Altoona, Pa., which made the list for the first time at No. 87.
Google ranked No. 1 this year, followed by SAS and The Boston Consulting Group.
