BTS sales gain momentum at Meijer

Meijer Inc., which has priced 100 back-to-school items at $1 or less, is reporting that business for its BTS items have “consistently doubled over the past few weeks,” and while shoppers have gotten a jumpstart on shopping for school supplies, they’ll continue to purchase them over the next several months.

According to the retailer’s customer survey, 70% of respondents (up from 60% in 2013) said they do not anticipate completing their shopping before school is in session.

“We typically see the biggest surge in back-to-school shopping the weekend before school begins, but we’ve already seen one of our best seasonal starts as customers are clearly looking for value early in the season,” said Peter Whitsett, EVP of merchandising and marketing for Meijer, in a statement. “We anticipate this will continue into the school year this fall.”
