Instacart, Shipt team up with Bed Bath & Beyond for same-day delivery

Delivery platforms continue their reach outside grocery channel

Instacart and Shipt, two leading grocery delivery platforms, are continuing to expand their services beyond food retail with new partnership deals with home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. on Tuesday launched Same Day Delivery at its Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy BABY stores, expanding the array of omnichannel shopping services available to its customers ahead of the 2020 holiday season. Same Day Delivery follows the successful introduction earlier this year of Buy-Online-Pickup-In-Store (BOPIS) and contactless Curbside Pickup, and will enable customers to shop their favorite products online and have them delivered to their doorstep within hours of purchase.

The retailer also announced a new strategic partnership with Shipt and Instacart. Same Day Delivery service will be available on the Shipt and Instacart websites and mobile apps, for customers shopping for their homes, baby or holiday essentials. As two of the leading delivery services and marketplaces today, both Instacart and Shipt each reach over 80% of American households.

Target-owned Shipt currently has a delivery deal with Bed Bath & Beyond, and existing Shipt customers will still receive free delivery on all orders over $35 when shopping directly through Shipt platforms.

“We are excited to launch a new strategic partnership with Shipt and Instacart on Same Day Delivery, bringing our unique, customer-inspired Home, Baby and Holiday range to their marketplaces to help us reach millions more people this holiday season,”  said Rafeh Masood, chief digital officer at Bed Bath & Beyond.

The Same Day Delivery service is available at a flat rate fee of $4.99 for orders over $39, providing an easy, convenient and affordable option. Once an order is placed, a personal shopper from the retailer’s Same Day Delivery partner Shipt will pick up the item at the local store and deliver to the customer’s home. Delivery cut-off times will vary based on location and zip code. Orders placed directly on bedbathandbeyond.com and buybuybaby.com will be eligible for Beyond+ members to use their membership discount and customers will be able to apply any valid coupons.

“At a time when our homes have become the center of our lives, our omni-always shopping experience is designed to make it as easy as possible to feel at home,” said Masood. “We’ve been delighted with the strong customer response to the introduction of BOPIS and Curbside Pickup this year, and the addition of Same Day Delivery provides another simple and cost-effective way to shop with certainty from the comfort of your own home this holiday season. So, whether you need a last-minute gift, are missing that all-purpose pan for Thanksgiving dinner, or need diapers or other home essentials right away, we will be there to help make this holiday season special.”

Bed Bath & Beyond currently has over 1,000 stores nationwide, but announced earlier this year it would be closing up to 200 of those locations over the next two years. The retailer is expanding its focus on online retailing.

For Instacart and Shipt, the deal with Bed Bath & Beyond represents another expansion of their delivery services beyond grocery, where they both made their mark.

The addition of Bed Bath & Beyond to Instacart’s roster of retail partners continues the San Francisco-based online delivery giant’s expansion beyond the thousands of food retailers it works with nationwide. Instacart has recently made ambitious forays into beauty (Sephora), convenience (7-Eleven), off-price/closeout retail (Big Lots), office retail (Staples U.S. and Canada), vitamins and supplements retail (Vitamin Shoppe) and prescription delivery (Costco Wholesale). Instacart also has expanded within the grocery segment, including delivery of alcohol, deli and meal orders, and on-demand delivery and other services for independent grocers, the latter through partnerships with C&S Wholesale Grocers and the former Supervalu (now part of United Natural Foods Inc.).

Instacart, too, continues to expand its pickup service — adding 1,400 more stores since March 1 — and grow its Instacart Enterprise e-commerce services business, which provides retailers with white-label online storefronts and other capabilities.

In addition to Bed Bath & Beyond, Shipt offers home delivery from its parent company Target, as well as Petco, Office Depot and OfficeMax, CVS Pharmacy, Costco Wholesale, as well as traditional grocery retailers such as H-E-B and Meijer.
