Starting Wednesday, Foursquare is offering a feature for retailers called Local Updates designed to entice customers to retail outlets via their mobile phones, according to several reports.
Merchants can send Local Updates — such as promotions, pictures or a text message — to loyal customers who have checked in to a store multiple times and are in its vicinity. Merchants can create the updates for free in Foursquare's self-service tool.

Foursquare is also introducing a revamped merchant dashboard with granular analytics that let businesses see which updates are pushing customers to recommend the business to their friends, and to check in themselves, according to Fast Company.
