ECR Seminar Reset for January

WASHINGTON -- A day-and-a-half-long seminar on Efficient Consumer Response has been scheduled for next January. Museum Gets Historic Scanner

WASHINGTON -- A Model A scanner has been donated to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History here by Spectra-Physics. The scanner, developed by the Eugene, Ore., manufacturer, was one of the first six scanners installed at a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio. The era of the scanner was born at that store at 8:01 a.m. on June 26, 1974, when a 10-count package of Juicy Fruit gum was passed over the scanner glass. Bernard Finn, curator of the museum's Division of Electricity and Modern Physics, said the Model A is "an historically important artifact.

It is an example of how quickly a new technology -- in this case, a laser -- can be adapted to make a significant impact on social institutions."
