NEW YORK — Gristede’s here, operator of 35 urban supermarkets, told SN Tuesday it is switching wholesalers.

After 30 years with White Rose, now a division of Associated Wholesalers Inc., Robesonia, Pa., Gristede's will begin buying all groceries and perishables from Wakefern, Keasbey, N.J., which is the cooperative wholesale supplier for the ShopRite chain. The switch is beginning during the next few weeks, John Catsimatidis, chairman and chief executive officer of Gristede’s, told SN.

He declined to discuss why the company is making the change. Gristede’s, with annual volume estimated at $275 million, had already been buying some product from Wakefern, including private label.
