IOWA CITY, Iowa — The City Council here will discuss the possibility of banning plastic grocery bags, according to local reports, after one council member suggested that the city look into the idea. The city’s recycling coordinator is researching policies on plastic bags, according to a report in the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

San Francisco banned plastic bags last year, and Los Angeles is planning to eliminate plastic bags by 2010. Other cities have failed to ban plastic bags, including Red Bank, N.J., which just this week agreed to require stores and restaurants to provide in-store recycling containers for plastic bags rather than banning them.
