ARMONK, N.Y. — IBM here announced yesterday that it is releasing a new version of its POS software for supermarkets, the SurePOS ACE application for 4690, that will support scanning and processing of the GS1 DataBar bar code on coupons as well as produce.
GS1 US has set Jan. 1, 2010, as the “Sunrise Date” when retailers are supposed to be able to scan and process the DataBar on coupons and produce; however, the date may be delayed for coupons based on surveys indicating many retailers won’t be ready by that date for that capability. Some retailers have indicated that their readiness for scanning the coupon DataBar has been affected by delays in receiving updated POS software from their technology providers.
In a recent check of major POS software providers, SN found varying degrees of DataBar compliance. NCR’s Advanced Checkout Solution (ACS) POS software (versions 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2) supports the produce DataBar, but is still being updated to handle the coupon DataBar, with a release expected this month. StoreNext and Retalix POS software support the DataBar (coupon and produce), while Fujitsu’s GlobalStore software does not, but is on “the roadmap” to do so by the end of this year, said Neil McGlone, a Fujitsu spokesman.
