NEW YORK — A coalition of retailers and other businesses known as New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes is planning a demonstration here today to object to a proposed “sin tax” on juice drinks and soda.
The event is set for a Fine Fare supermarket on 172nd Street to protest the 18% tax on sodas proposed by Gov. David Patterson.
The group said Wednesday that it had been joined by the Bodega Association of the United States, a group representing 11,000 neighborhood grocery stores in New York.
“The exorbitant cost of doing business in New York has already taken a major toll on the state’s small supermarkets and neighborhood bodegas, with more than 2,300 bodegas closing over the past four years, representing a loss of more than 8,500 jobs,” the group said in a statement.
