PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway said it has raised more than $11.6 million for prostate cancer research through customer donations this year — the 10th consecutive year the chain has been involved in raising money for that cause.

During that period Safeway and its customers have raised $65.4 million, the company said.

"Ten years ago this unique funding and awareness-raising channel didn't exist," said Dr. Jonathan Simons, president and chief executive officer of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. "Safeway changed that and, in the process, has altered the trajectory of this disease. No business has done more to remove the stigma from prostate cancer and create a dialogue about the disease."
