Wal-Mart Pares Food Storage Bag Brands

Wal-Mart here has reduced by half the number of storage bag brands represented in its stores, according to an Advertising Age report.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here has reduced by half the number of storage bag brands represented in its stores, according to an Advertising Age report.

Attributing the information to “a person familiar with the matter,” it said Wal-Mart no longer carries Glad and Hefty food storage bags. Ziploc bags and private-label Great Value offerings are all that remain.

Dollar sales of store-brand food storage bags were up 7.9% across food, drug and mass channels (including Wal-Mart) during the 52 weeks ending Dec. 26, 2009, vs. the prior year, according to the Nielsen Co., Schaumburg, Ill. Sales of national brands fell 5.4%.

Sales of Associated Food Stores’ Western Family food storage bags have risen even more substantially— by 15%—during the most recent 52-week period, while national brands, priced around 10% higher, are down 2%, category manager Steve Skinner told SN.

In an effort to regain share and account for a drop in commodity costs Glad reduced its price by 35% last year, according to Skinner, while Ziploc applied an additional 5% promotional allowance to all of its storage and freezer bags.

“It was a four-month promotion and I’d never seen that,” Skinner said of the timeframe.
